Dahlias as Peonies Collection
Dahlias as Peonies Collection
I know we all love a peony, but if you calculate it, peonies give you ½ bucket of cut flowers per square metre over one whole year — a truly hopeless production score. Compare that to this selection of dahlias, almost peonies in their luxurious curviness and curls, but bountiful cut flower croppers, they are as near to dahlias-as-peonies as you’ll ever find.
All dahlia flowers are edible, scatter their petals on salads for flavour, texture and colour.
This collection contains 1 or 2 tubers each of:- Dahlia 'Café au Lait'
- Dahlia 'Penhill Dark Monarch'
- Dahlia 'Penhill Watermelon'
- Dahlia 'Café au Lait Royal'
- Dahlia 'Perch Hill'

Growing Guide
-
Can you leave dahlias in pots over winter?
Yes, you can leave your dahlias in pots over the winter but you will need to make sure they are protected from the cold. Cut back your plants, relocate your pots to a frost-free garage or shed for the winter and allow the compost to dry out completely. You can add extra insulation around the pot if temperatures in your garage are likely to drop below freezing. Bring the pots back out into the light when the temperatures rise again in the spring.
-
How tall do dahlias grow?
There are compact varieties around 40cm (15in) tall, as well as varieties that reach over 1.5m (5ft) – as well as everything in between!
-
When do dahlias start to sprout?
You’ll see tubers planted in early spring start to sprout 2-3 weeks later.
-
Are dahlias perennial?
Dahlias are tender perennials and the tubers can be killed by frost.
-
Are dahlias poisonous to pets?
Yes, unfortunately dahlias are toxic to cats and dogs.
-
Are dahlias good for bees?
The single dahlias are a fantastic source of forage for bees and other pollinators, providing nectar well into late autumn.
