Flowering
Dahlias are some of the lowest maintenance, highest production cut flowers and garden plants you can grow. Here at Perch Hill, we grow hundreds and hundreds of dahlias, and they are the highlight of the summer and autumn garden.
  • Yes, you can leave your dahlias in pots over the winter but you will need to make sure they are protected from the cold. Cut back your plants, relocate your pots to a frost-free garage or shed for the winter and allow the compost to dry out completely. You can add extra insulation around the pot if temperatures in your garage are likely to drop below freezing. Bring the pots back out into the light when the temperatures rise again in the spring.

  • There are compact varieties around 40cm (15in) tall, as well as varieties that reach over 1.5m (5ft) – as well as everything in between!

  • You’ll see tubers planted in early spring start to sprout 2-3 weeks later.

  • Dahlias are tender perennials and the tubers can be killed by frost.

  • Yes, unfortunately dahlias are toxic to cats and dogs.

  • The single dahlias are a fantastic source of forage for bees and other pollinators, providing nectar well into late autumn.
